Frequently Asked Questions
How long will my hot tub last?
A well manufactured spa, from a quality company, can give 25 years of joyful operation. I’ve seen some still running at 30 years. When you notice a problem with your spa, give me a call so we can keep your hot tub running as long as possible.
My spa is installed in a deck, can it still be fixed?
A deck installation is certainly attractive and makes it easier to get in and out. Repairing your hot tub becomes another question. Proper construction determines whether access to the equipment area is possible. When you call us for help, we may want to see a few photos first to determine how we’ll approach the repair.
What does a flow error mean?
A “FLO” error indicates that there might not be enough water running through the heater. For safety reasons, the heater is prevented from operating until the problem is fixed. Start by removing the filter(s) and see if the flow error goes away and the heater begins operating again. Maybe new filters are all you need. If the error remains, I can diagnose and fix any flow error your spa may have.
What can cause my spa to stop heating?
First, see the “FLO” error info above. Other causes could be a defective heater or circuit board. Every spa has its own personality and I can diagnose and fix the issue quickly and easily.
Why did my jet pump stop working?
If you just drained and refilled the spa, there might be an airlock which you can usually fix yourself. Other causes might be a defective fuse, the pump itself, a bad upper control panel or main circuit board. Give me a call and let’s discuss the symptoms; I can help.
If my jet pump leaks, do I need a new one?
Many times a leaking pump just needs a new seal kit to be installed. This is much cheaper than a new pump assembly. Other times the plastic wet end of the pump assembly might be cracked or a plumbing fitting that attaches to the pump is damaged. I’ll fix the issue in the best way possible to save you money.
How often should I change my spa water?
This depends on how often the spa is used, how many people are in it, and how clean they are. As a general rule, spa water should be changed 2-4 times per year.
Why is my spa water cloudy?
There are several reasons you might have cloudy spa water. Is it time to drain and refill? (See above info re: changing the water). You’ll need to sanitize the water 1-2 times per week, depending on use, and adjust pH and Alkalinity weekly. Using an Ozone system helps and so does adding a Vision or Frog System.
How often should I expect my spa cover last?
If the spa is kept under a gazebo or patio cover; 7-8 years is not uncommon. For hot tubs located in direct sunlight and rain, 4-5 years is more normal. It also helps to wash the cover and treat it with a conditioner every 1-2 months.
Why did my jets stop spinning?
We have hard water in San Diego County so often we’ll see calcium buildup on the jet components. Also, sand and dirt can get in those same components over time. If you have removeable jets, soak them in a vinegar and water solution, (50-50), for a few hours. If that does not fix the problem, you’ll have to buy new replacements.
My spa looks like it might be leaking: what now?
A leak can come from almost anywhere in the spa. Start by looking at the big jet pumps while they are running at high speed. Other fittings in the equipment area could be an issue. If you find the source, (or even if it’s not visible), you’ll need professional help to repair it. Leaks are no fun to fix, but I’ve done enough of them to know how to do it. Call me for help.
My GFI keeps tripping. What can cause that?
If the GFI breaker trips when you try to reset it, there is probably a defective component, heater, pump, etc.), that needs replacing. If it takes several hours or days to trip, the GFI breaker itself is probably wearing out and needs replacing. Sometimes a new breaker has been installed improperly. Give me a call, I can help you diagnose and fix the issue.
How often should I replace my spa filters?
Spa filters should be cleaned monthly and replaced every 2 years.
Does an ozone system really help keep my water clear and clean?
Yes, it does. Ozone systems were introduced in the spa industry in about 1988 and have been used effectively ever since. There are over 20 systems available but each hot tub manufacturer has their own preference. I’ve seen enough of these systems to know which are best for your spa, give me a call for help.
My upper jet control panel does not activate the jets. What now?
Upper Control Panels cannot be repaired and must always be replaced if they are defective. Sometimes the panel is ok but the component they control is defective. I can help you begin the diagnosis over the phone.
